After the 'sellout' Sunday afternoon curtain raiser that saw Dr Helen Doe FRHistS entertain a full house in The Wing's Geoffrey Page Centre with her fascinating talk entitled Stanford Tuck - Hero of the Battle of Britain, last Sunday saw the audience enjoy a fascinating afternoon of film.
Phillip Day's Fields and their secrets: Before the Few told the enthralling tale of Wiggs and Zena, a special breed of warrior who came to the fore in a nation’s darkest hour,
The film was well received by an appreciative audience which was also able to enjoy the other attractions at the Memorial, as well as the Cockpit Cafe and The Scramble Experience, with the clifftop tribute to the Few now open until 5pm for the summer.
One visitor commented: "We didn't know what to expect, but we're extremely glad that we came. It was a very moving film and I doubt there was anyone there who was not touched by the great courage and valour of the young men called to arms when needed. As a result of these guys, we've all enjoyed 80 years of peace."
This coming Sunday, 23 March, sees another free event aimed at providing something extra for our friends, visitors and supporters when Geoff Connolly presents his talk entitled 50 Plus Years of Flying.
Geoff, an aviation professional, now in his 56th flying year, began flying with the RAFVR with the University of London Air Squadron, gained his Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplanes) in 1970, and has maintained proficiency in light aeroplanes since then.
After legal training, he joined the RAF and was an operational helicopter pilot before becoming a flying instructor, later graduating from the 1986 class at the Empire Test Pilots School. Geoff has over 11,000 hours of flying experience, gained on over 80 types of helicopters and aeroplanes.
The talk begins at 2pm and there are limited seats available. Those wishing to attend must book in advance by calling 01303 249292 or emailing enquiries@battleofbritainmemorial.org
