Gurkha course ends at Memorial

Junior soldiers from the 2nd Battalion Royal Gurkha Rifles were delighted to see the National Memorial to the Few on Tuesday (10 June) as the sight marked the end of a 13-kilometre ‘casualty extraction march’ along the coast.

The demanding trip from Western Heights through Samphire Hoe and along the coast to finish at the National Memorial to the Few marked the final event of a seven-week, junior non-commissioned officer leadership course which the 99 soldiers completed with flying colours.

Company second-in-command Captain Jitendra Tamang explained that the best performing soldiers over the course would win promotion to Lance Corporal. The company is based at Shorncliffe Barracks in nearby Folkestone.

The soldiers, who carried full kit, including (unloaded) weapons, set off in sections of eight and stopped for a brief lunch, cool down and photocall at the Memorial before heading back to the barracks by coach.
