A stunning, hyper-realistic model of the No 56 Squadron Hurricane in which Wing Commander Geoffrey Page was shot down 85 years ago this August was unveiled at this year’s Memorial Day.
Modeller Dom Pound, who created the superbly detailed1/24 scale model of the fighter, presented it to Battle of Britain Memorial Trust honorary secretary Patrick Tootal (centre) and memorial manager Jules Gomez
The model, based on a standard plastic kit but then painstakingly altered and detailed to replicate P2970, the Hurricane flown by Wg Cdr Page in the Battle of Britain in 1940, is one of more than 100 hyper-realistic models being created by modeller Dom.
A real ‘labour of love’ for the skilled modeller, Dom’s project to remember more than 150 of ‘the Few’ by creating scale replicas of specific aircraft that he is giving to museums around the country is set to take him around ten years to complete.
He chose Pilot Officer (at the time) Page’s Hurricane US-X to reflect the fact that it was Page who, in later life, became the driving force behind the campaign to create a permanent tribute to his RAF colleagues on the clifftop at Capel-le-Ferne.
Dom said: “The aircraft has been built using the Airfix 1/24 Hurricane but with several refinements, including extra details in the cockpit area and added details in the gun bays. The most striking feature is the detail now added around the engine, which has been recreated using blueprints and books to give a more realistic representation of a Hurricane in 1940.”
