The men of the RAF who fought the Battle of Britain changed history. In defeating the Luftwaffe in 1940 to stop a Nazi invasion of this country, they turned the tide of the Second World War.

Four years later in 1944, the UK’s unvanquished status meant the south coast could be used as the springboard for the invasion force that landed in Normandy and pressed southwards to retake mainland Europe and end the conflict.

The men who won that decisive Battle in the summer and early autumn of 1940 are remembered at the National Memorial to the Few, a simple clifftop tribute at Capel-le-Ferne in Kent.

Known forever as ‘the Few’ after wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s most famous speech, “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed, by so many, to so few”, the fewer than 3,000 aircrew who took part are listed on the Christopher Foxley-Norris Memorial Wall.

While it cares for the ‘national’ memorial, unveiled by Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in 1993, the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust receives no public funding. It relies on shop and café sales, visitors to The Scramble Experience and donations to support its work.

As well as keeping alive the memory of the Few, the Trust has an ambitious education agenda and is keen to ensure current and future generations understand the bravery and sacrifice of the men of the RAF who won the Battle of Britain.
