Trustee Mrs Deborah Burns, widow of Battle of Britain veteran Flt Lt Owen V Burns, took part in a moving ceremony on Saturday to mark the sacrifice made by Polish airmen during the Second World War.
Mrs Burns represented the Battle of Britain Fighter Association, now incorporated within the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust CIO, at the 59th Ceremony of Homage to Fallen Polish Airmen at the Polish Air Force Memorial, Northolt.
A wreath was laid on behalf of each of the Polish squadrons that flew alongside the Royal Air Force from 1940 to 1945, either by a veteran or by one of their descendants. The Polish squadrons proved to be brave combatants during the Battle, achieving significant success.
The replica of the wartime Standard of the Polish Air Force was paraded during the ceremony, which was attended by a detachment of Officer Cadets from the Polish Air Force Academy.
Civic and military dignitaries included Air Chief Marshal Michael Wigston, Chief of the Air Staff, and Polish Ambassador Arkady Rzegocki.”I was very proud to represent the Fighter Association and the Trust at such a moving event,” said Mrs Burns.
