The nation pays tribute to the Few

Members of the Trust joined royalty, the Chief of the Air Staff, politicians, service personnel, civic leaders and four of the Few at the nation’s annual tribute to the men of the Royal Air Force yesterday (17 Sept).

The annual Service of Thanksgiving and Rededication held each year at Westminster Abbey on Battle of Britain Sunday was attended by Squadron Leader Geoff Wellum DFC, Wing Commander Paul Farnes DFM, Wing Commander Tim Elkington and Wing Commander Tom Neil DFC*, AFC, AE.

The moving service, conducted by the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, Dean of Westminster, was attended by Their Royal Highnesses The Price of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall and by Prime Minister Theresa May.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier KCB, CBE, DFC, ADC, gave one of the readings, while the address to the packed Abbey was given by The Venerable (Air Vice-Marshal) Jonathan Chaffey, Chaplain-in-Chief of the Royal Air Force.

Music from the Central Band of the Royal Air Force, the Fanfare Team and the Choir of Westminster Abbey added to the occasion and the morning’s events were brought to a fitting conclusion by two passes from a Spitfire and Hurricane from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
