Tickets are selling fast for the next of our Sunday afternoon speakers.
Mary Smith, who will be visiting on 14 April at 2.30pm to present a fascinating talk entitled A Schoolgirl’s War, is the latest speaker to be booked by Trustee Andy Simpson to entertain visitors and add something extra to a visit to the Memorial.
A former teacher whose most recent post was as headteacher of Maidstone Grammar School for Girls, Mary will tell the story of school life in Kent during World War Two.
Her talk is illustrated by a number of fascinating original paintings that were created as the war unfolded by one of her art teachers. It tells a tale of frequent air raids, life in the shelters, and disrupted schooling.
Other talks for later this year are already in the pipeline. Wing Cdr Sophy Gardner MBE RAF (rtd) will be at The Wing on Sunday 12 May and on 28 July Andy Saunders will talk on Battle of Britain Oddities.
Booking is recommended as seats are limited to just 50. Tickets are FREE for Hurricane members of Friends of the Few and just £5 for Spitfire members, while non-members pay £10. There’s more useful information here. Tickets can be booked by ringing 01303 249292 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
The Memorial’s other attractions will also be available, including The Scramble Experience, and refreshments will be available from The Cockpit Café. Since the site is now on summer hours, visitors should have time to explore after the talk as well as before it.
