The Battle of Britain Memorial Trust is sad to announce the death of another of the Few, Archie McInnes, who died just hours after celebrating his 100th birthday with family and friends.
Born on 31 July 1919, McInnes joinied the RAF Volunteer Reserve and was called up on 1 September 1939. He was commissioned at the beginning of July 1940, just a few days before the start of the Battle of Britain.
After converting to Hurricanes, McInnes joined No 601 Squadron at Exeter on 17 September and made his first flight the next day. He moved to No 238 Squadron at Chilbolton on 8 October 1940 and was released from the RAF in 1946 as a Flight Lieutenant. He lived in Great Eversden, Cambridgeshire.
