Air Marshal Michael Wigston CBE has been named as the next Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) and is expected to take up his post in the summer. He is also being promoted to Air Chief Marshal.
Air Marshal Wigton will take over the role from Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier, who has attended the Trust’s Memorial Day in his role as CAS.
As Assistant Chief of the Air Staff, a role he took on in March 2017, he took on responsibility for the RAF 100 centenary programme. In August 2018 he was appointed Deputy Commander Capability and Air Member for Personnel and Capability.
Air Marshal Wigton’s operational appointments have included spells at Al Udeid Airbase, Qatar, as the Chief of Combat Operations in the Combined Air and Space Operations Centre, Basrah International Airport, Iraq, as Commander of 903 Expeditionary Air Wing, and a year in Afghanistan as the Director Air Operations in Headquarters ISAF Joint Command, as a result of which he was appointed CBE in 2013.
He completed his pilot training on the Tornado GR1 in 1992 before undergoing a succession of frontline tours, including operational deployments enforcing the no-fly zones in Iraq.
In 2005 he assumed command of 12 (Bomber) Squadron, leading the squadron on two operational tours in Iraq and large force exercises in Canada, Malaysia and the USA.
In 2007 he became Commander of 903 Expeditionary Air Wing in Iraq and in 2013 he was made Tornado Force Commander before becoming Principal Staff Officer to the Chief of Defence Staff. In 2015 he was appointed Administrator of the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia and Commander British Forces Cyprus.
The Trust has enjoyed considerable support from a succession of Chiefs of the Air Staff and wishes Air Marshal Wigton every success in his new role.
