The men Churchill christened “the Few” will be honoured once more with a service of commemoration here at the Battle of Britain Memorial on 15 September.
The Battle of Britain Memorial Trust holds the service on Battle of Britain Day each year, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls.
“The Trust promised Wing Commander Geoffrey Page, the former pilot who first suggested a Memorial to the Few should be built, that we would never forget to mark this special day,” explained Trustee Andy Simpson. “And we never will.”
The Memorial inspired by Wing Cdr Page was unveiled by Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in 1993, and the Trust is already making plans to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the event next summer.
Wing Cdr Page, who was awarded an OBE as well as the DSO and DFC and bar, died in August 2000.
The short service at the Memorial on 15 September will begin at 10.55am, and members of the public are invited to arrive by 10.45am to pay their respects to the Few.
