Join the queue for 2013 tours

Squadron Leader Tony Pickering was the star of the show as this year’s second coach tour of “Hellfire Corner” proved as successful as the first 2012 event in the early summer.

The Trust is already working on exciting new plans to build on this year’s well-supported, exclusive tours of the area that saw much of the aerial fighting during the Battle of Britain in 1940.

Details of the 2013 tours will be finalised in the spring, with enthusiasts warned to sign up quickly as spaces will again be limited. Past tours have included attractions such as the Battle of Britain Museum at Hawkinge, with its extensive collection of memorabilia, and the village of Elham, which played a unique role during the Battle.

The tours are led by author and historian Geoff Simpson, a member of the RAF Historical Society and author of many texts on the Battle including “A Dictionary of the Battle of Britain”. Uniquely, they include lunch and afternoon tea with one of the Few.

September’s end-of-season tour saw Squadron Leader Pickering in fine form, entertaining the guests over lunch and talking to them throughout the rest of the tour.

The tours offer enthusiasts an unbeatable opportunity to combine a great day out with the chance to learn more about the historic events of the Battle of Britain, much of which took place in the skies over this part of the country. The tours start at the National Memorial to the Few at Capel-le-Ferne.
