The Luftwaffe mounted a major offensive on that day but suffered heavy losses at the hands of the Royal Air Force, causing Nazi leader Adolf Hitler to rethink – and later abandon – his invasion plans.
The Battle of Britain Memorial Trust marks this special day with a short Service of Remembrance each year – marking the day itself rather than the closest Sunday.
