The heroes of the Battle of Britain refused to be defeated as the Luftwaffe attacked through the summer and early autumn of 1940 – and while we wouldn’t put ourselves on a par with the men who fought the Battle of Britain, we are equally determined to weather this particular storm.
The Covid-19 challenge means The Wing and the car park at the site are currently closed to comply with government guidance – and if you do visit the clifftop site, please ensure you follow all the guidance on social distancing. This is a great place for a quiet stroll, but please take advantage of the space and keep well away from other walkers – and please keep your dog on a lead; that rule hasn’t changed!
We had lots of exciting things planned for this year, which marks the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, and we have rearranged many of them for later in the year. See our event listings. In addition, we have pledged to take our Memorial Day celebrations online and will provide more information about how that will work in due course.
In the meantime we have created some great Battle of Britain colouring sheets to keep the children occupied and we have begun creating Facebook Live events. If you missed the first one, you can catch up by joining site manager Jules Gomez on a virtual tour by clicking here.
We’ve added a number of Battle of Britain-themed word searches here, and we’ve also been busy uploading videos to our new YouTube channel; it includes our online VE Day Commemoration and an introductory talk on three members of the Few. You can find all those videos and more by checking out the channel here (and please subscribe to the channel while you are there!)
Please remember that while our doors are closed, we have no income, and we still have ongoing costs. The Battle of Britain Memorial Trust receives no public funding of any kind, with our only funding coming from shop and cafe sales, The amazing Scramble Experience and donations. We know time are hard for everyone, but if you can spare a donation towards keeping alive the memory of the Few, please click the donate button at the top of the home page.
