News - William’s words of wisdom

A book of poetry by Flight Lieutenant William Walker AE, one of the Few, has now gone on sale in aid of the fund-raising efforts for The Wing, the new learning centre planned for the Capel-le-Ferne site.

William, who celebrates his 98th birthday this summer, has been writing poetry for pleasure for many years. It is his poem Our Wall that greets visitors when they approach the Christopher Foxley-Norris Memorial Wall at Capel-le-Ferne and his poem Absent Friends that is now a staple part of veterans’ gatherings.

The poems are often amusing but always thought-provoking and at times they display a poignancy that reveals something of the wartime experiences William lived through in his late twenties.

Earlier this year, Battle of Britain Memorial Trustees decided that William’s work deserved a wider audience and asked if they could publish a collection of his poetry. William was not only delighted but agreed the Trust could share the copyright in his work, with the result that all proceeds from the book are going to the new learning centre appeal.

This book is an enjoyable collection of work that was written initially for William’s own pleasure but that is destined now to bring pleasure to many others. It will be available from Memorial Day onwards at Hunting Lodge, priced at just £7.
